This Forbes article reports the purchase, and talks about the possible benefits etc. The chip design firm, P A Semi, that Apple is buying, seems to have some chops - engineers of their team apparently earlier worked on the Itanium, Opteron, UltraSparc, and StrongARM processors. The article goes on to say that this “could spell a new future for Apple’s flagship iPhone and possibly iPods.”.
Excerpts from the P A Semi site’s “about the team” page:
“Dan Dobberpuhl, who cofounded P.A. Semi in July 2003, has been credited with developing fundamental breakthroughs in the evolution of high-speed and low-power microprocessors. … he has been credited with creating some of the most fundamental breakthroughs in microprocessing technology … In 2006, Dobberpuhl was elected to the prestigious National Academy of Engineering for “Innovative design and implementation of high-performance, low-power microprocessors … Dobberpuhl holds 15 patents … has authored many publications related to integrated circuits and CPUs, including coauthoring the seminal textbook Design and Analysis of VLSI Circuits, published by Addison-Wesley in 1985”.
Pretty interesting …
